Funny Inn's Hakuba Guest Guide

Welcome! Here's a guide to help you make the most of your stay in Hakuba.

Major Ski Resorts

Hakuba Valley is famous for its collection of world-class ski resorts. Most resorts are covered by the "Hakuba Valley" all-mountain pass, but you can also buy single-resort tickets.

Happo-One

The largest and most famous resort in Hakuba, known for its challenging terrain and its 1998 Winter Olympics history. Great for intermediate to advanced skiers.

Hakuba 47 & Goryu

Two connected resorts offering a huge variety of terrain. Hakuba 47 has an excellent terrain park, while Goryu has wide, beginner-friendly slopes at its base.

Iwatake

Lift Tickets - How to Buy

  • Online: Many resorts offer a discount for buying tickets online in advance via their websites.
  • At the Resort: You can always buy tickets on the day at the resort ticket windows.
  • Hakuba Valley Pass: If you plan to ski multiple resorts, the Hakuba Valley Pass is a good option. It can be purchased online or at main resort offices.

Transportation

Getting to Hakuba

1. Shinkansen (Bullet Train) + Bus

This is the fastest way. Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo or Ueno Station to Nagano (approx. 90-110 minutes). From Nagano Station, take the "Alpico" express bus to Hakuba (approx. 75-90 minutes).

2. Direct Highway Bus

Several companies (like Alpico or Nagano Snow Shuttle) run direct buses from Tokyo (Shinjuku, Haneda, Narita) to Hakuba. It takes longer (approx. 5 hours) but is direct and often cheaper.

3. Limited Express Train

The "Azusa" Limited Express runs directly from Shinjuku to Hakuba Station once per day. It's scenic but takes about 4 hours.

Getting Around Hakuba

Hakuba Valley Shuttle Bus

During the winter season, a comprehensive shuttle bus system runs between all the major resorts and villages. If you have a Hakuba Valley pass, this bus is free. Otherwise, there is a small fee per ride.

Taxis

Taxis are available but can be expensive and hard to find during peak times. It's best to book in advance if you need one. Ask us at the front desk, and we can help call one for you.

Rental Car

Renting a car (make sure it's 4WD with snow tires) gives you flexibility, but be cautious of road conditions. An international driver's permit is required.

Winter Attractions

Besides skiing and snowboarding, there are other amazing things to see in the area. These often make for a great rest day.

Jigokudani Snow Monkeys

A world-famous park where you can see Japanese macaques (monkeys) bathing in a natural hot spring. This is a full-day trip from Hakuba, but truly unforgettable.

Hakuba Onsens (Hot Springs)

Relax your sore muscles in one of Hakuba's many natural hot springs. Many hotels and public bathhouses (like Mimizuku no Yu or Iwatake no Yu) offer this for a small entry fee.

Matsumoto Castle

One of Japan's most beautiful and complete original castles. It's known as the "Crow Castle" for its black exterior. This is another great day trip, often combined with a visit to the city.
